1st to 10: Is It Nier Enough?

Welcome to the first in an on going series I’m calling first to 10, where I will be giving my thoughts and impressions on games new and old after my first 10 hours of playing them. I chose 10 hours because of the old 40 hour JRPG rule. 10 hours would be about 25 percent of the game. These days JRPGs can be 80 and 100 hours, sometimes even more, but I’ll stick to 10 to keep things simple.

Nier Replicant is a remake of Nier released in April of 2010. It’s the predecessor of Nier Automata. I would see this game in stores but I never got around to picking up. Honestly I had a really busy 2010 and I didnt have a channce to look this game up thorougly. So I judged this game by its cover, which looked confusing and somewhat generic to me at the time to me at the time. But apparently I missed out in a big way because Nier Replicant is a wonderful game. Even judged by today’s standards.

The Million Dollar JRPG Gaming Trend

One day you were playing a jrpg, going through a dungeon or forest and you found a treasure chest. Inside was armor and It had awesome stats. You went to equip it and when you got back to the game screen or into your first battle you noticed something amazing. Your characters armor changed on screen. There was a noticeable change to the look of your character. This opened a broad new world of possibilities for something that wasn’t advertised on the back of the game box. Style and self expression. This was a feeling I had only experienced in Jrpgs, but other genres have adapted it as well. Something about this experience makes these games memorable and would go on to make video game companies lots of money.

In games like World of Warcraft, in fact in most MMORPGs, this is a common effect. Customization is needed to differentiate between your character and the thousands of others you will see through the course of your online journey.

In other modern games like Neir Automata, while your armor doesn’t change because all of your upgrades are internal, your weapons change and effect your play style.

What started as a cosmetic change with similar functions now can completely change the way a game is interpreted and enjoyed. That variety and enjoyment bred, in some players, a need to collect and experience all the different types of weapons and armor available in a JRPG.

A Link Between JRPG’s And Madden Football ?

One thing I feel that every JRPG fan hates is asking someone if they play video games, seeing them light up and say yes, only to have them tell you that they play Madden. That’s because people who play Madden games will often times only play sports games and they are as far as you can get from JRPGs. Sports games are usually heavily based in reality and JRPGs get extra points for bending the rules of reality in New and interesting ways. So in this scenario, unless you are a sports fan, you may have nothing to talk about even though you both love video games. This be an awkward conversation.

I’m not going to leave it open to interpretation, I am not a fan of sports games. Any game that has a ball and doesn’t take place in a sphere pool with Waka and Tidus, probably won’t hold my attention for long. But I grew up with an uncle that loved Madden football, which is with out a doubt the most popular videogame football franchise that has ever existed. My uncle also played football too and was one of the best high school players in the country and went on to play NCAA football. So you know he was serious about the game both games. He wanted me to play with him because i loved games so I tried to learn the Madden best way I knew how, I studied all of the stats.

Back then the Madden games would come with cards explaining all the stats for the teams. I memorized them so I would know who to pick and when, but in the end I never got into the game. There was just no passion to keep going. Years Later I was looking at a strategy guide for Breath of fire 3 and I had a strange sense of deja-vu while trying to memorize the stats of weapons and armor. I remembered Madden. Ever since then I’ve wondered if people who play sports games have bad memories of trying jrpgs. The Irony is that at their core, they are very similar.

Working Designs: The People’s Champ

In the 90s there seemed to be one company that certainly thought of its fans first. You could tell how much they loved their fans not only by the quality of their work, but by the quality of their collectors editions. Of course I’m talking about Working Designs, The People’s Champ ** Que the Lunar Silver Star Battle Music**

This is not meant to be a comprehensive Biography of Beloved Jrpg publisher, although I do love those. Its just a highlight of some of their works that i feel not only changed the state of JRPGs but gaming as a whole. With that said, I feel it would be improper to keep mentioning 90s rpgs but not pay homage to the company that brought me my favorite game of all time Lunar Silver Star.

This company is almost completely responsible for making me such a diehard Jrpg fan and possibly why I became so interested in anime as well. Im sure I’m not alone here so let’s dive into their history.

What is Working Designs. What did they actually do?

Working Designs gained their fame as a video game publisher. Since Victor Ireland was a big gamer himself, he knew that there were a a lot of games in Japan that would do great in America if they were translated and released. He had a real talent for selecting and helping to develop great games. One such games was Lunar The Silver Star for the Sega CD.

Octopath Travler: the 90’s Revisited

In a time when everyone is looking towards the future, I want to take a moment and travel to the past. If you like the idea of that then you probably already love Octopath Traveler. The team at Square and Acquire really accomplished something very difficult in today’s gaming landscape. They managed to make a JRPG appealing to the Main Stream but also Hit the nostolgia button for us 90’s JRPG gamers while making the whole thing feel like a new experience.

The Final Fantasy VII Remake EXPerience

I like many of you had been following the development of this game for years and was very excited for its release. But when I actually got it, i was astounded by it. Not just because of the game itself but the phenomenon and experience around it. Crazy circumstances that forced everyone to focus on this game and for me brought a much needed ray of sunshine to a gloomy time

The energy around this game was amazing. It was ultra nostalgic. Let me try to explain. This game is a remake of a beloved jrpg classic. These kinds of games have come out before but this felt special. Maybe it was the nostalgia of grinding for hours trying to beat Ruby weapon. Maybe it was the shared frustrating anticipation of waiting for this remake to finally be released. But the Jrpg community felt united in its excitement and understanding of how monumental this game could be. Square even had a trailer that acknowledged that all of us who played the original had now grown up and were in different places in life, yet excited to jump back into the adventure and revisit our friends in Midgar.
